What do Sarah Palin, Glocks, Mental Health Policy, the Tea Party, Liberals, Conservatives, and Political Rhetoric Have in Common?

Answer:  They are all being blamed for the tragic shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona.  The Pima Country Sheriff (an elected Democrat) touched off the debate by blaming Sarah Palin and harsh political rhetoric.  Tea partiers shot back, blaming liberals.  Predictably, some have blamed gun laws. One congressman blamed mental health policyLiberals are blaming conservatives, and vice-versa (again, predictably).

Notably absent from the list of suspects is Jared Lee Loughner, who allegedly pulled the trigger (innocent until proven guilty, mind you).

Many Americans seem to have a questionable propensity for blaming either other people or inanimate objects (or both) for certain actions when the responsible person or persons are in plain sight.  Our society has become one in which responsibility for ones actions is no longer taken upon one’s self, but is instead assigned to people or things in the world around us.  Tragic.

Just as our responsibility for actions is migrating outside the individual, so too is each person’s self-worth.  Our self-worth is no longer tied to our intrinsic happiness, but is now tied to the perception of people around us which we shape through the acquisition of objects.  Americans buy McMansions and luxury cars which they can’t afford in an effort to keep up with the Joneses.  Credit card debt skyrockets.  Our national “leaders” are actually following the masses in this respect, rather than leading from the front.  The National Debt is exploding.  It is only a matter of time before interest rates skyrocket and the economy collapses into a true depression that will make the last few years look like the roaring 2000s.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Giffords and the Giffords family.  Rep. Gifford was determined to interact with those she represented, despite the inherent risks.  Her courageous example is one for all of us to emulate.

As for the rest of us…Aristotle said that Justice was essentially when we get what we deserve.  What do we deserve, America?
